Medical Geology: A Regional Synthesis

Medical Geology: A Regional Synthesis (Hardcover) – 414 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1st Edition Jan 14, 2011

Medical Geology is a rapidly growing field concerned with the relationship between natural geological factors and human and animal health, as well as with improving our understanding of the influence of environmental factors on the geographical distribution of health problems. This book brings together the work of geoscientists and medical/public health researchers, which addresses health problems caused, or exacerbated by geological materials (rocks, minerals, atmospheric dust and water) and processes (including volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Among the environmental health problems discussed in this book are: exposure to toxic levels of trace essential and non-essential elements such as arsenic and mercury; trace element deficiencies; exposure to natural dusts and to radioactivity; naturally occurring organic compounds in drinking water; volcanic emissions, etc. The text also deals with the many health benefits of geologic materials and processes. This wide-ranging volume covers issues in medical geology all over the world with each author covering their respective region. It provides examples from different continents as well as a state-of-the-art review of the latest developments in the discipline. The authors are all recognized geoscientific and medical experts working in the field. The book is written for a wide variety of specialists from geologists, geochemists, pathologists and medical doctors to veterinarians and biologists.

Chapter Devoted to Fluoride: Fluoride – Owing to its extensive use in preventive dentistry in the post-World War II era, fluorine (F), which is commonly referred to as its ionic form, fluoride, is one of the most familiar and controversial elements of the Periodic Table. Safe, responsible and sustainable use of fluorides is dependent on decision-makers (whether they be politicians or parents) having a firm grasp on three key principles; i) that fluorine is not so much “essential” as it is “everywhere”, ii) that recent human activities have significantly increased fluorine exposures to the biosphere, and iii) that fluorine has biogeochemical effects beyond bones and teeth…

Fluoridation: Autopsy of a Scientific Error

Fluoridation: Autopsy of a Scientific Error, 2010 – 234 pages

By:  Dr. Pierre-Jean Morin, Ph.D;  John Remington Graham, LL.B.;  Gilles Parent, nd

Abstract: Since the 1950’s, towns all over are being pressured to put fluoride in their drinking water. Data shows that not only does it have dangerous side effects but it does not even do what it purports doing. Dental and bone fluorosis and fluoridation-related cancers and congenital defects are increasing at an alarming rate: Why? Because of a questionable scientific finding made 60 years ago that allowed big aluminium companies to recycle their fluoride leftovers from chemical processes into drinking water while dental professionals held to the conviction of its health benefits.

Along the years, quite a number of peer reviewed studies invalidated this finding and more still demonstrated the dangers of systemic absorption of fluorides through fluoride polluted air or artificially fluoridated tap water. The authors of this book gathered the most recent information pertaining to this demonstration (they went through over 2000 new scientific articles and reports).

They are well known in North America for they are the specialists the courts listen to when citizens challenge their municipal government on the merits of water fluoridation.  As of today, they won all their court cases.

The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There

The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It There , 2010 – 372 pages

By:  Paul Connett, PhD;  James Beck, MD, PhD;  H . Spedding Micklem, DPhil

I have had the great privilege of meeting one of the co-authors of this book, Dr. Paul Connett, on several occasions; including international conferences on water fluoridation. He has even visited Waterloo, Ontario twice in 2010, upon invitation, in connection with a local, concerted and sucessful effort to remove fluoridation from our municipal drinking water (we had our vote on October 25, 2010). I had a chance to read pre-publication copy of this book and it is a wonderful handbook for citizens who want a readable piece which explains the intertwined science and politics on this alarming issue. Rather than going into my own review I think the one that appears in “booklist” a publication of the American Library Association parallels my own views completely:

*Starred Review* On the eve of the new millennium, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), listed water fluoridation as one of the twentieth-century’s 10 greatest public-health achievements. Yet according to the authors of this painstakingly researched exposé of fluoridation’s overall ineffectiveness and toxicity, endorsements such as these from the CDC and other health organizations are motivated more by face-saving politics than credible research. Fluoridation advocates who have previously branded detractors as conspiracy theorists and shills for junk science will be hard pressed to debunk the hundreds of peer-reviewed studies and sound scientific reasoning presented here. In demonstrating fluoridation’s ineffectiveness, the authors cite exhaustive evidence proving fluorides only benefits are topical, as in tooth brushing, as opposed to swallowing. But the case against fluoride’s alleged safety, even in small doses, is more alarming, with multiple studies showing fluoride’s probable complicity in lowered intelligence scores, thyroid dysfunction, hip fractures, and the ominously rising incidence of osteosarcoma in boys. The authors’ academic, hyperbole-free writing style serves them well in marshalling a series of facts that, all by themselves, expose fluoridation as a false panacea. It remains to be seen, however, whether the public-health community will give this landmark work due credit or continue to rubber stamp an outdated policy that, like bloodletting and trepanation, properly belongs on the scrap heap of sham medical interventions. (Booklist, Sep-2010)

I urge anyone who lives in a fluoridated community to read this book. The unethical, unnecessary and potentially dangerous practice of fluoridation has to be stopped. This book should help to do this, not only in Canada and the U.S. but also in the handful of other countries that still continue this outdated and unsafe practice.

NRC Report – Fluoride In Drinking Water, National Research Council Of The National Academies 2006

Fluoride In Drinking Water – A Scientific Review of (US) EPA’s Standards – 2006  – 374 pages

One of the most comprehensive reviews of water fluoridation conducted to date. This investigation into water fluoridation looks at a broad spectrum of research.  This NRC 2006 report reviewed over 1,000 relevant studies examining the effects of fluoride in drinking water.

Ch.1: Introduction
Ch.2: Measures of Exposure to Fluoride in the United States
Ch.3: Pharmacokinetics of Fluoride
Ch.4:Effects of Fluoride on Teeth
Ch.5: Musculoskeletal Effects
Ch.6: Reproductive and Developmental Effects of Fluoride
Ch.7: Neurotoxicity and Neurobehavioral Effects
Ch.8: Effects on the Endocrine System
Ch.9: Effects on the Gastrointestinal, Renal, Hepatic, and Immune Systems
Ch.10: Genotoxicity and Carcinogenicity
Ch.11: Drinking Water Standards for Fluoride

On March 22, 2006, a prestigious 12-member panel of the National Research Council completed a three year review of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (US EPA’s) safe drinking water standard for fluoride known as the Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG). Following what has become one of the most thorough and objective reviews of the literature in 60 years, the NRC panel unanimously found that the MCLG is too high and asked the EPA to lower the standard in order to protect children against severe dental fluorosis and to protect all groups from bone fracture.  At that time the MCLG was set at 4 parts per million (ppm)  / 4 milligrams per liter (mg/L).  Note:  This panel’s learned recommendations do not only pertain to that higher concentration of fluoride in drinking water.

The Fluoride Deception – By: Christopher Bryson

The Fluoride Deception – By: Christopher Bryson
Seven Stories Press, 2004 – Politics and government – 374 pages

Veteran investigative journalist Christopher Bryson’s new book on the highly controversial subject of fluoride could not come at a more important time.

On March 22, 2006, a prestigious 12-member panel of the National Research Council completed a three year review of the appropriateness of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) safe drinking water standard for fluoride (the Maximum Contaminant Level Goal, or MCLG). After one of the most thorough and objective reviews of the literature in 60 years, the NRC panel unanimously found that the MCLG is too high and has asked EPA to lower the standard in order to protect children against severe dental fluorosis and to protect all groups from bone fracture. They have asked the EPA to perform a risk assessment to determine what the standard should be.

In a society where asbestos, lead, silica, beryllium and many other carcinogens have found their way into the marketplace and then been recalled, one has to wonder why fluoride, so toxic it is used as a rat poison and pesticide, is embraced so thoroughly and so blindly.

With the narrative punch of Jonathan Harr’s A Civil Action and the commitment to environmental truth-telling of Erin Brockovich, The Fluoride Deception documents a powerful connection between big corporations, the U.S. military, and the historic reassurances of fluoride safety provided by the nation’s public health establishment.

The Fluoride Deception shows that fluoride pollution was one of the biggest legal worries facing additional key U.S. industrial sectors during the Cold War. And the book documents how a hitherto-secret group of corporate attorneys, known as the Fluorine Lawyers Committee, whose members included U.S. Steel, Alcoa, Kaiser Aluminum, and Reynolds Metals, commissioned research at the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati to “provide ammunition” to those corporations who were then fighting a tidal wave of citizen claims for fluoride injury. The research was directed by Dr. Robert A. Kehoe, more famous for his lifetime defense of the safety of leaded gasoline. When the half million dollar medical study showed that fluoride poisoned lungs and lymph nodes in laboratory animals, the research was buried, until Bryson dug up a copy during research for his book. One leading scientist who reviewed the 40-year-old Kettering study suggested that its non-publication might have been responsible for an epidemic of emphysema among key sector of the industrial workforce.

Christopher Bryson has reported science news stories for media outlets such as the BBC and the Christian Science Monitor, and for the Discovery Channel through NBC and ABC News Productions. He was part of an investigative team at Public Television that won a George Polk Award for “The Kwitny Report.” The book has an introduction by Theo Colborn, co-author of Our Stolen Future (1996), which was the subject of a PBS Front-line documentary, and a postscript by the 2000 Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, Dr. Arvid Carlsson.

The Fluoride Deception reads like a thriller, but one supported by 200 pages of source notes, years of investigative reporting, scores of scientist interviews, and archival research in places such as the newly opened files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission. The book is nothing less than an exhumation of one of the great secret narratives of the industrial era; how a grim workplace poison and the most damaging environmental pollutant of the cold war was added to our drinking water and toothpaste.
